SINGAPORE, WEDNESDAY, 30 April 2008 : Gorilla Crew Company, one of Korea’s world renowned leading new wave hip-hop dance company debuts in Singapore on 27, 28 and 29 June 2008 with its energetic and high-octane dance extravaganza, ‘B-Boyz & Ballerina’.
Formerly known as ‘The Ballerina who loves a B-boy’, the pulsating dance performance features a boisterous ensemble of 19 b-boys and b-girls formed by members of the Gorilla Crew (Able Crew & Brooklyn Monkeys), who are well known internationally owing to their huge success in many world competitions.
This performance is presented by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Foundation.
The term B-boy often refers to a break dancer who dances to the rhythm when a DJ pauses the disk. B-boy and rap music best represent hip-hop culture in America. The head spin is a major breakdancing skill that involves spinning one’s body on the floor with only the top of the head touching. ‘B-Boyz & Ballerina’ features the best break dancing routines in the world, performed by members of Gorilla Crew.
The show has no dialogue, relying only on dance, music, and an onstage spontaneous dance competition, a performance that both the youth and everyone in the whole family can understand and enjoy.
'B-Boyz & Ballerina’ is a new concept in performing arts and has drawn considerable attention world-wide. The non-verbal performance combines ballet and break dancing and features breath-taking dance routines that unfold the storyline.
The story is about a sophisticated classical ballerina who falls in love with the main character, a b-boy after watching him break dance and hip-hop in a club. Drawn by his moves, which are full of energy and charisma, the ballerina gradually falls for him and is attracted to the street dance of break dancing and hip-hopping as well. Both the ballerina and the B-boy eventually fall in love with each other but their love is challenged by another group of B-Boys who try to separate them. The ballerina starts to learn his break dancing routine and she works hard hoping to show him her own dance style. The love story involves ten scenes, each with various types of dances. The two groups of B-Boys eventually engage in onstage competition to win her love. So guess who wins her heart in the end?
The audience will feel the exuberance of the highly energised b-boys and b-girls and cheer them on in their frenzied, skilful free styling displays of hip-hopping and break-dancing. They will also unwittingly be drawn into this heightened, hyper rousing dance fiesta where they will be spell-bound by the Technicolour street fashions, joyous soundtrack and the gravity-defying floor routines of windmills, L-kicks and more.
A sell-out show in Korea, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, the Portsmouth Theatre at the Arundel Festival Fringe in England, the London Cochrane Theatre and the New York John Jay Theater. The show will tour America, Japan, China and Spain after Singapore.
